 I lost my keys.  Now what?

How do I know whether I should lock up when I leave the beach?  And what needs to be locked?

Please bring your keys with you every time you go to the beach.   

A good guide is to lock up if no one is there when you leave, even if there is a car or two in the parking lot.  If there is only a person or two remaining when you’re ready to leave,  ask if they have their keys with them.  If they don’t, feel free to lock up (and let them know).  

Both garage doors need to be locked (from the inside) as well as the entry door to the beach house.  Both bathroom doors and the utility room door should all be locked.  The utility room door should remain locked at all times except when in use.

Who cleans up at CBA?

You do!  

We ask everyone to clean up after themselves, which includes washing and putting away dishes, returning beach toys to the toy bins, pulling chairs away from the water after using them, and stowing boats in the boat area.   It’s especially important to make sure beach toys, boats, and furniture are away from the water's edge at the end of the day.  Lake levels rise quickly and strong southerly winds can easily take items into the lake or ruin them.

 We also invite volunteers to help with general beach debris clean-up several times a year, as well as weekly help like trash take -out etc.

Why isn’t there a lifeguard?  I see we have a lifeguard station.

CBA did have a lifeguard in the summer months most years until the pandemic.    However, even before the pandemic, it became harder to find interested lifeguards.  Since the pandemic we have been unable to find lifeguards.

Can I bring friends down to the beach?

Yes!    If you have a group of more than a few, sign up with the events committee first.   It’s easy and  it helps us prevent crowding on super busy days.   You must accompany your non-member friends.   Here’s the link to sign up : Member Events Calendar & Form

I see remains of a campfire down here, but I’ve been told they aren’t allowed.  What gives?

Burlington City Ordinance forbids open fires within City limits.  Therefore, fires are not allowed on the beach.  If you find the remains of a fire that is completely out, you can help by placing the wood on the brush pile.

Who owns CBA?

The Crescent Beach Association is composed in part of homeowners who own a home within a designated area and have bought a CBA subscription, or a home whose previous owners bought a subscription to the Association.  Subscribers must maintain annual memberships in order to remain in good standing with CBA. 

CBA owns the 2 parcels of property on Crescent Beach Drive which include the beach, the parking lot and driveway, the beach house and the green space between the hedge and the street.  

What’s the difference between subscribed membership and unsubscribed?

At CBA, subscriptions go with the home, not with individual members.  Each homeowner within the defined CBA neighborhood is eligible to buy a subscription for their home.   Subscribed properties are entitled to privileges that other memberships don’t have.  For instance, voting rights on Board members and capital improvements, guaranteed beach access, and a share of the proceeds should the property ever be sold.  Most homeowners agree that subscriptions also add to the real estate value of their property.  If a subscriber sells their subscribed home, the subscription stays with the home. 

How come my neighbor can have a membership to the beach but their house isn’t subscribed?

Currently, the CBA by-laws allow for people to be members on a year-to-year basis as long as they live within the designated area, even if their home isn’t subscribed.  These memberships are considerably more expensive than subscribed memberships and do not hold voting rights.

How is CBA run?  

CBA is bound by By-laws developed at its inception and amended periodically over the years.  The by-laws require CBA be governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees, comprised of 9 Active members (ie members who pay full membership fees and are owners in subscribed homes) and elected by subscribed Active and Inactive members.  Trustees commit to serving 2 year terms and often serve consecutive terms.

Does CBA have rules?  What are they?

Yes, CBA has By-laws which the Board of Trustees is bound to follow.  The Board in turn, makes rules and policies aimed at facilitating the successful operation of beach activities and behind the scenes operation.   Many of those rules are posted in the beach house and our newsletters usually remind members of the most important ones.  Sometime soon you’ll find an updated list of CBA rules and policies here on our new website.  In the meantime, our newsletters usually are a good place to stay apprised of member rules.  

My friend lives on the next street over but has been told they can’t be a CBA member.  Why not?

The CBA by-laws state that membership is available only to households on specific streets, and even only certain parts of some streets.  The Board of Trustees is bound by the by-laws.

Can I use the beach house year-round?

Members in good standing may enter the beach house in the off season.   However, the water is turned off and trash pick-up is suspended for the off season, so that means bring your trash home with you and don’t use the water or the toilets.

Why isn’t the water on year-round?

The beach house is not insulated so the water needs to be turned off during the winter to prevent freezing pipes.
